Driveway & Patio Cleaning in Newhaven

Newhaven is three miles along the A259 and about nine minutes door to door, which makes it the town I work in most often after Seaford itself.

It is also a different job from Seaford, and the difference is the port.

The grey, and why water alone will not shift it

Most exterior cleaning is biological. You are removing something that grew. Newhaven adds a second layer that did not grow at all: a fine mineral film of brake dust off the ring road, diesel particulate from the harbour and the ferry traffic, and gritty dust blown off the industrial estate.

That film behaves differently under a jet. Algae lifts and flushes away. Traffic film is greasy, and hitting greasy dirt with high pressure water tends to spread it into a thinner, more even layer rather than remove it. The drive comes up looking uniformly grey and you have essentially polished the problem.

So on the harbour side of town I pre-treat with a degreasing solution, leave it to dwell for ten or fifteen minutes, and then wash. That step adds time and it is included in the price rather than added to it, because if I skipped it here I would not be doing the job.

Terraces, alleys and hose runs

The housing above the harbour is dense Victorian and Edwardian terracing, and the practical constraint is access rather than anything about the paving.

I carry enough hose to reach most back gardens through a house or down a shared alley, but pressure falls away over a long run and past roughly 30 metres I would rather move the van than push it. On the streets where parking is tight that occasionally means an early start. Tell me the rough distance from where a van could stop to where the work is, and I will plan it properly instead of standing in your hallway working it out.

Denton and the newer housing towards the ring road are much more straightforward, with normal frontages and off-street parking.

What the paving is

A lot of what I clean in Newhaven is not the original surface. Terraced forecourts have frequently been concreted over at some point, and back yards are often a patchwork: some original brick or stone, a section of 1980s slabs, and a newer bit where a shed came down. Different materials want different pressure, and a patchwork yard takes longer than its square metre count suggests because I am changing setup as I move across it.

Council-built semis at Denton mostly have concrete drives and paths, which are the easiest and cheapest thing I clean.

Salt, again, but sheltered in places

Newhaven gets the same coastal salt loading as Seaford, with more shelter available. A property up the hill on the northern side of Denton is meaningfully protected. A house on the harbour road is not protected at all and takes salt, grit and spray together.

The practical version: if you can see the water from your front door, plan on cleaning more often than any general guidance suggests, and take the biocide treatment. If you are up the hill with buildings between you and the sea, you are closer to inland intervals.

Getting a price

Photographs and a rough size, as everywhere. For Newhaven I would add one thing: if the surface looks grey rather than green, say so and include a close-up. That tells me whether the degreasing step is needed and stops me under-quoting the time.

3 road miles from Seaford, about 9 minutes via the A259 west along the coast. Travel is my cost to carry, so the square metre rate and the minimum charge are the same here as they are on my own street.
