This is the shortest area page on the site, and it is short on purpose.
I cover Brighton and Hove. It is 13 miles along the coast road and about half an hour. My rate is the same there as it is anywhere else.
What I will not do is write a thousand words implying it is my core patch, because it is not, and the reasons are practical rather than a matter of taste.
The housing does not suit the work
Roughly half of the households in Brighton and Hove are flats, and off-street parking is uncommon across most of the city. A jet washing business needs two things from a property: a private hard surface worth cleaning, and somewhere to put a van within hose reach of it. A great deal of the city offers neither.
Compare that with Peacehaven, six miles east, where practically every house has a block paved frontage for two cars and a place to park while I work on it. That is where my day goes furthest, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest about how I actually run the week.
What does work here
The eastern villages, first of all. Rottingdean, Saltdean, Ovingdean and Woodingdean have proper driveways, gardens and access, and they are on my way along the A259. Those are ordinary jobs at ordinary prices and I am happy to take them.
Basement courtyards and lightwells, second. These are the greenest surfaces in the city because they are shaded all day and drain slowly, and they clean up dramatically. They are small, so the £150 minimum usually applies, and the question is always access rather than the surface itself.
Private forecourts and shared parking areas for blocks of flats, third. These are often large enough to be a proper job, and the practical requirement is somebody with the authority to instruct the work and an agreement about moving cars.

The chalk and the gradient
Brighton sits on chalk like Seaford and Lewes, so drainage is quick and settlement is rare. The complication is gradient. A lot of the city is genuinely steep, and on a steep site run-off goes downhill fast and ends up somewhere that is not your property.
I plan for that before I start. On some sites it means working in sections and controlling the water rather than letting it run.
What to send me
For a Brighton job I need one extra thing beyond the usual photographs and rough size: a picture that shows the street, so I can see the parking situation.
That single photograph decides more Brighton quotes than the surface does. If there is genuinely nowhere to stop within about 30 metres, I would rather tell you that than take a booking I cannot deliver.

Identical to everywhere else. £4.50 a square metre for slabs and concrete, £5.50 for block paving with re-sanding included, £5 for natural stone, minimum job £150.
Getting here
13 road miles from Seaford, about 30 minutes via the A259 coast road or the A27. Travel is my cost to carry, so the square metre rate and the minimum charge are the same here as they are on my own street.

Do you actually cover Brighton or is this page just for search engines?
I cover it, and this page is deliberately shorter and blunter than the others because the honest picture is less appealing than it would be if I dressed it up. Most of the city has no off-street parking and no private hard surface for me to clean. Where I can genuinely help is Rottingdean, Saltdean, Ovingdean and Woodingdean, and any city property with a courtyard, a basement area or a private forecourt.
I have a small basement courtyard. Is that worth doing?
Often yes, and it is one of the better jobs in the city. Basement areas are permanently shaded, permanently damp and go green faster than anything else. They are usually small, so the £150 minimum applies, and the practical question is access: I need to get a hose down there and I need somewhere to put the van within about 30 metres. Send a photograph including the street and I will tell you honestly whether it works.
Why is Brighton at the bottom of your coverage list?
Because I am one person with a van and I go where the work suits what I do. Brighton has real competition, and more importantly it has the least suitable housing in my whole radius: around half the households are in flats and off-street parking is rare. Seaford, Peacehaven and Polegate have driveways on nearly every property. That is a practical decision about where my day is best spent, not a comment on the city.
Can you do a shared forecourt for a block of flats?
Yes, and it is a sensible job because the area is usually large enough to make the trip worthwhile. What it needs is somebody with the authority to instruct me, whether that is a managing agent or a residents' association, and agreement about parking on the day. I quote it exactly as I would any other surface, off the same rate card.
